Low-Carbon Energy Use

LAU incorporates renewable energy into its Beirut and Byblos campus operations through solar photovoltaic generation and solar water-heating systems. Facilities Management supplies energy-consumption and renewable-generation data, while the Office for Sustainability uses these records for institutional sustainability assessment, greenhouse-gas calculations and reporting.

University-Wide Low-Carbon Energy Use

LAU’s published SDG 13 energy table reports the following university-wide figures:

Energy indicator Reported value
Total energy used 76,550 GJ
Total energy used from low-carbon sources 7,365 GJ

These figures distinguish overall energy use from the contribution of low-carbon sources.

Campus Energy Performance

The following table presents the 2024-2025 campus energy indicators used in LAU’s reporting, with values reproduced as supplied by Facilities Management.

2024-2025 energy indicator Beirut Campus Byblos Campus
Total energy consumption (kWh) 8,696,724 10,521,460
Solar PV production (kWh) 578,934 1,367,305
Solar PV as % of total electricity 7.0% 15.4%
Energy Use Index, EUI (kWh/m²/year) 91.8 100.9
Net Energy Use Index (kWh/m²/year) 85.7 87.8

The campus records document solar electricity production at both locations alongside reported consumption and energy-performance indicators.

Solar Photovoltaic Contribution

Solar PV production is presented below by campus, together with combined production and the GJ equivalents included in LAU’s existing indicator report.

Solar PV production Beirut Campus Byblos Campus Combined
kWh 578,934 1,367,305 1,946,239
GJ equivalent ≈2,084 ≈4,922 ≈7,006

The table expresses the same photovoltaic production in two units. It represents solar electricity generation, rather than total university energy consumption.

Renewable-Energy Sources

LAU’s renewable-energy infrastructure includes solar photovoltaic installations and solar thermal systems supporting building hot-water needs.

Renewable-energy installation Campus Application
Solar photovoltaic systems Beirut and Byblos Electricity generation for campus operations
Solar water-heating system at the Wadad Sabbagh Khoury Student Center Beirut Domestic hot water
Solar electricity and hot-water systems documented for the Joseph Jabbra Library and Riyad Nassar Central Administration project Byblos Building electricity and hot water

The campus dataset quantifies photovoltaic production separately. Solar thermal installations represent another renewable-energy application, but their contribution should not be assumed to explain the difference between the reported PV production and university-wide low-carbon total.

Facilities Management: Energy Saving and Water Conservation

Renewable Energy and Avoided Emissions

Facilities Management reported approximately 470 metric tons of CO₂ emissions avoided through renewable energy in 2023–2024, increasing to approximately 1,570 metric tons in 2024–2025.

These figures describe avoided emissions associated with renewable energy. They are reported separately from LAU’s greenhouse-gas inventory and are not deducted again from its reported emissions.

Energy Efficiency Supporting Low-Carbon Operations

LAU complements renewable-energy generation with measures intended to reduce campus energy demand. Facilities Management documents efficient lighting, occupancy-based controls for air-conditioning and lighting, and energy-conservation features incorporated into construction and renovation projects.

These measures support lower-carbon operations by reducing demand alongside renewable generation. Energy savings are distinguished from low-carbon energy production and are not counted as additional renewable energy generated.

Institutional Monitoring and Reporting

Facilities Management supplies operational data on electricity consumption, fuel use and renewable-energy production. The Office for Sustainability uses these records to assess institutional climate performance, calculate greenhouse-gas emissions and prepare LAU’s reporting to the Lebanese Ministry of Environment.

This division of responsibilities connects campus operations with institutional sustainability monitoring and supports assessment of progress toward LAU’s energy and emissions-reduction commitments.
