Research for Sustainability
Research for Sustainability at the Lebanese American University (LAU) means addressing and promoting sustainability through academia. Through strategic partnerships, research institutes and events in addition to published research, LAU advances knowledge and develops solutions regarding health accessibility, social justice and environmental wellbeing.
AiW partnered with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) for the “Countering Backlash: Reclaiming Gender Justice” project which contributed to creating crucial research and identifying opportunities to counter the backlash and address the erosion of gender objectives.
AiW joined forces with the Global Women’s Institute (GWI) at the George Washington University in support of UN Women and the World Health Organization to collect data on violence against women (VAW) needed to develop policies and interventions promoting gender equality.
The Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine contributes to research with the LAU Hematology Conference, an event that convenes interdisciplinary experts to explore the latest advancements in blood cancer research and treatment with a focus on improving patient outcomes.
Annually, graduates from the the Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine present their published research in the Graduate Medical Education Research Day. Through this initiative, the LAU community showcases its dedication to SDG 3; good health and wellbeing.
Under the School of Architecture and Design, the Institute of Environmental Studies & Research (IESR) investigates issues of environmental nature, and the impact of such issues on the long-term sustainability of the region and its resources.
The School of Arts and Sciences (SOAS) hosts a variety of research institutes, namely, the Institute for Migration Studies (IMS), the Institute of Media Research and Training (IMRT), and the Center for Integrative Research (CIR).
The School of Engineering (SOE) pioneers research that advances sustainable technologies, addresses environmental challenges, and promotes real-world impact such as the collaboration between USAID and the SOE about the industrial wastewater management in the Litani river.
The Arab Institute for Women (AiW) bi-annually publishes works in Al-Raida (“The Pioneer”) an interdisciplinary semi peer-reviewed journal published at LAU. AiW also commissions and publishes original research to advance knowledge necessary to further social and policy change at the national and regional levels.
