Sustainability Learning Initiatives
Lebanese American University (LAU) provides a wide range of training opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to build knowledge, awareness, and capacity across environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). These trainings are delivered through academic programs, co-curricular activities, institutional initiatives, and specialized workshops, ensuring that sustainability principles are integrated across all levels of the university.
1. Learning Initiative on Environmental Aspects of Sustainability
LAU provides training on environmental sustainability primarily through academic programs, co-curricular initiatives, and public engagement activities. Sustainability is embedded in the curriculum through interdisciplinary courses addressing climate change, energy systems, water resources, and environmental policy, targeting students. These are complemented by experiential learning initiatives such as the Change Makers program, which develops applied sustainability competencies. In addition, LAU organizes public lectures, seminars, and workshops on environmental topics, including climate change and sustainability transitions, which are open to students, faculty, staff, and the wider community. While most structured training is student-focused, these open-access activities contribute to broader capacity building across the university. Together, these initiatives demonstrate LAU’s commitment to advancing environmental literacy and sustainability awareness across multiple stakeholder groups.

These are reinforced by workshops and activities focusing on mental health, resilience, and personal development. Many of these activities are open to the broader university community, including staff and faculty, supporting well-being and social awareness beyond the classroom. Additionally, community engagement initiatives and awareness sessions promote civic responsibility and social impact. These are complemented by public lectures, panel discussions, and workshops addressing gender equality, inclusion, and social justice, often open to the wider university community. In parallel, institutional offices provide training and awareness programs related to respectful conduct, inclusion, and anti-harassment, targeting students, faculty, and staff. These efforts are supported by institutional policies promoting non-discrimination and equal opportunity.
